It’s every traveller’s dream to hop on a plane or a train on a whim and travel to far-off places for an unforgettable adventure. In real life, however, we might have to work around that dream and adjust it slightly to meet work / family / other commitments without turning ourselves into travellers that haven’t got a penny to their names. If you’re stuck at home, but want to engage in experiences that give the next best feeling to the travel rush – read on. Here’s a list of the best things to do when you can’t travel:
1. Organise Photos into Albums
How many photos do we snap on our travels? If, like us, you’re the photo-fan type, a quick check might result in the discovery of thousands of (disorganised!) photos in your library. If you’re stuck at home, now would be a good time to edit, delete or organise photos into photo albums like we did using Printerpix. They deliver high-quality products and the customer service is of excellent standard. We have purchased 9 albums from them so far and look forward to ordering more. Why not treat yourself to personalised and meaningful gift? That way you can revisit memories without having to scroll through hundreds of similar photos every time.
2. Watch Films about Pretty Places
What better way to transport yourself to a land you want to be in than a moving picture? Our most favourite shows are Leap Year, which makes us want to go to Ireland every time. Outlander makes us want to drop everything and move to Scotland right away.
Hallmark movies may have the same predictable plot-line, but we just LOVE the seasonal stories, especially the magical White Christmas ones. It might actually sound like these films do nothing to satiate our wanderlust. Well, our brains are equipped with a colourful imagination and for those few precious hours and a few after them, why not let yourself be whisked off to the loveliest of places?
3. Read Books that Inspire Travel
This kind of ties in with the one before it. Cuddle up on the sofa with a cuppa and let yourself get lost in the wonderful places the story takes you to. Our favourite happens to be (surprise, surprise!) Outlander, but Brighton Belle, England Expects and London Calling by Sara Sheridan, as well as Two for Joy follow suit.
4. Read up on (the History of) a place you Visited / Want to Visit or Watch a Documentary
If you’re a history buff, think of a place you visited that sparked your interest in history and read up on it. Alternatively, you may want to research a fascinating attraction and learn all the juicy facts about it. Some websites even allow you to take a virtual tour of the palace / castle in question, which is extra fun! You could even watch a documentary if reading is not your thing. Which brings us to…
5. Plan your Next Trip in Detail
After all the knowledge you would have gained about your place of interest, all that’s left to do would be to actually go there in person. There is something about the aura of a place that cannot be experienced by any other means other than being there physically.
So why not plan your next trip while you’re at it? Read up on the best things to do in the city or the countryside, the most recommended attractions and any hidden gems you shouldn’t miss, the reliability of the transport system… plan it all down to a T so that as soon as the opportunity for travel arises, you’ll be good to (pack and) go! Having money to spend will help too, so why not check out this post on How to Save Money for Travel.
6. Make a Vision Board
A vision board allows you to make a visual representation of your goals and dreams. Seeing pictures of all the places you want to visit will enable you to have a clearer image of your travel goals. That way, while you’re at home, you can do all you can to work on your dreams until you can make them come true.
7. Be a Tourist in your Own Country – If You Can
If you have the opportunity to do so, go out and explore your own country. You might be surprised by how many gems lie hidden, waiting for you to discover them. We have the tendency to program our minds into believing that the grass is greener on the other side, but if we take the time to look at our surroundings with a fresh pair of eyes, we will probably gape in awe at the wonders before us.
8. Treat Yourself to Travel-Related Products
If you’ve been working hard lately and feel you deserve a reward, why not purchase an item (or two!) that reminds you of your favourite city or shows off your passion for travel. Browse online at your leisure and support artists from all over the world. We’ve got quite the collection from this store right here.

I think you’ve hit all the points for those of us that love to travel. It’s all about looking forward to travelling again and planning out that next trip. I’ve missed 2 trips over the last 6 weeks and can’t wait to get out there again.
Thank you! Yes, it feels good to have something to look forward to. Sorry you missed those trips. We missed one too and were really bummed. Hopefully things will get back to normal soon so we can get back to our adventurous lives 😀
Great Post, I’ll be making a vision board as soon as I figure out my post quarantine goals xx
Thanks! That sounds great – we’re sure you’ll get lots of bright ideas. Best wishes xx
[…] We have also tried these presets for our own personal creation – a photo album created on the Printerpix UK website. We love the collection we’ve made of albums of our travels! Why not try it for yourself? If you want more ideas about things to do at home when you’re not travelling, check out this post here: Best Things to Do When You Cannot Travel. […]
The activity that I liked best was planning my next trip. I would really like to go to Scotland. I really like taking photos with my phone but I don’t like putting them in an album. I might create a vision board in summer because I will have more free time to do the things that I want to do.
Scotland is a wonderful place to visit! There are lots of things to do there 🙂 You can always look at your photos again on your phone – not everybody likes albums, after all. Oh yes, we get to do lots of fun things during the summer holidays. Lucky us 😉
