As some of you loyal readers may know already, we consider Scotland to be one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Thanks to inspiration from Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander, we booked a getaway to the charming Highland capital city – Inverness – with its quaint buildings, glorious scenery, and of course, small yet cosy and particularly excellent places to eat.
We tend pay special attention to the size of the portion in relation to the price of the dish. Luckily, the people of Inverness seem to revere food as much as we do, which contributed to the homely feeling we get whenever we visit this place. This is why it was so important to us to find restaurants that serve good quality food at reasonable prices. In our defence, all that exploring did make our stomachs rumble!
Here’s a list of the restaurants we went to and totally recommend:
1. The Mustard Seed
This restaurant is so popular that unless you book in advance, you will be sorely disappointed because most evenings it is fully booked! In fact, we only managed to get a table here on our second visit. It was worth the wait though. The food was cooked to perfection and although the servers were bustling about, we were served with a smile and were not kept waiting unnecessarily. 2. Zizzi
An Italian restaurant, this is the restaurant we ate at when we craved pasta. We like pasta served with a creamy sauce and this restaurant definitely delivered. The waiter who served us was very warm and welcoming on our first visit, which probably explains why we felt so drawn to this place. Whatever the weather is like, this restaurant is also a perfect spot for lunch as it provides a view over the river through the glass windows that surround it. 3. Johnny Foxes
We popped into this bar and restaurant mostly because we were overcome by an intense desire for a rich, creamy, smooth and satisfying Guinness on a Friday night. We were also drawn in by the sound of music and the merry chatter that wafted through the crisp evening air. Drinking on an empty stomach never did anybody any good, so we asked for the food menu and opted for the traditional dish of venison and the most delicious rump steak ever. These were later washed down by another pint of beer and we visited this restaurant another two times – yes, it was that good! You may view the menu and contact the restaurant by clicking here.
4. R&B’s
This place was very crowded and we almost did not enter, but good things come to those who wait. We ordered a healthy portion of chicken and it was mouth-watering! At first we thought it would not be filling enough, but then we noticed the potatoes at the bottom. Superb!
5. Domino’s
On both visits, we stayed at the Travelodge hotel, which is conveniently situated right next door to the pizza parlour! That said, we usually treat ourselves to local dishes when we travel, but the temptation for junk food on a rainy evening was too great and we willingly gave in to it – we’d burned all the calories beforehand anyway with all that walking! Gosh, was it worth it! The pizza was full of flavour and just the right mix of ingredients! We were served by a polite gentleman, too, so we highly rate the service.
The only downside is that the pizza cannot be eaten at a table there because there is a parking space but no room for tables. That worked out in our favour though; eating pizza in our hotel room made us feel like we actually owned a home in Inverness – so we heartily recommend doing that once on your trip. It’s also a budget-friendly option too after all that splurging.
That’s all folks! We hope you get to visit this enchanting city and savour the delicious food it offers! Have you got any recommendations of your own? As much as we enjoyed dining in these restaurants, we’d love to try out new places on our next visit. Comments, questions, suggestions are welcome in the comments sections below!
