Discover the Vibrant Victoria Gardens

On one of my evening strolls, I stumbled upon the Victoria Gardens, a quintessential Victorian urban public park. This green oasis in the heart of town retains its original features, offering a serene retreat for visitors. My favourites were the picturesque bandstand and meticulously maintained flower beds.

Take a leisurely stroll in the park, and if you’re up for it, enjoy a takeaway dinner amidst nature’s beauty. While I usually avoid single-use containers, this was a rare treat that allowed me to appreciate the power of green spaces on the mind and soul. If possible, prepare a homemade dinner such as pie and cake. That way, you’ll have enjoyed nature without increasing your carbon footprint.

To add a touch of mystery to your visit, head towards the stone circle within Victoria Gardens. Erected in 1918 for the National Eisteddfod, this circle is a modern addition to Neath’s historical landscape. Delve into medieval times when minstrels and bards would gather here for music and poetry competitions. The nearby bandstand pays homage to this tradition, which continues today with annual events alternating between south and north Wales.

A Tranquil Walk along Neath Canal

No visit to Neath is complete without a walk along the Neath Canal. This leisurely to moderate walk offers respite from busy roads. If you spend a lot of time in the city, you’ll definitely appreciate the soothing sound of silence, interrupted only by leaves rustling on the breeze. Be sure to wear comfortable shoes as some areas can be slippery. A raincoat is a handy companion, saving you the trouble of carrying an umbrella as you take in the scenic views.

Turn Back Time at Aberdulais

While a visit to Aberdulais Tin Works and Waterfall sounds tempting, please note that the site is currently undergoing renovations. Stay updated with the National Trust’s announcements for its reopening. In the meantime, explore other well-cared-for places in the region.

Feel Nurtured by Nature at Gnoll Country Park

You’ve got some time off, and what better way to spend it than surrounded by nature? Nestled in the heart of Neath lies the idyllic Gnoll Country Park, a haven for nature enthusiasts and seekers of serenity. A leisurely half-hour walk from town transports you into a world of towering trees, tranquil duck ponds, and 18th-century cascades.

Nature lovers will be thrilled by the lush landscapes, while photographers will find endless inspiration in this natural wonderland. Don’t miss the opportunity to explore its trails, capture stunning photos, and experience the peacefulness that only nature can offer.

Venture out of Neath and into Swansea

If you want to discover more of Neath’s surroundings, Swansea is a stone’s throw away! However, before departing, consider this – do you prefer the old-world charm of historic towns or the sleek allure of modern cities? If you answered yes to the latter, modern Swansea is just a 15-minute train ride away. If you’ve had enough of green spaces and want a dash of blue in your day, Swansea is the place to be! You could easily spend several hours in this coastal city, even if it’s just walking by the sea and admiring the numerous boats moored in the marina.

Final Thoughts

Whether you visit Neath for its Victorian charm, ancient mysteries, or natural beauty, this town leaves a lasting impression on all who explore it. So, pack your bags and make your way to wonderful Wales – you won’t be disappointed.
